6th Grade Science

At Corvian Community School, we endeavor to create scientifically literate citizens and creative problem solvers. Our hands-on approach to teaching will promote natural curiosities and bring out the scientist in each student. Middle School science follows the NC Essential Standards and will take an inquiry-based approach to the studies of earth, life, and physical sciences. Students will be encouraged to not only understand the “whats” of science, but will also be encouraged to uncover the “hows” as they are taught to dive deeper into content by using reason and problem solving techniques. Safety in the science lab, integrating technology with science, and following scientific methods of investigation will be key components of science lessons.

Instruction and learning in Common Core Science grade 6 focuses on 3 critical areas: Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science.

Physical Science: Forces and Motion; Matter: Properties and Change; Energy: Conservation and Transfer

Understanding the properties of waves and the wavelike property of energy in earthquakes, light, and sound; understanding structure, classifications, and physical properties of matter; understanding the characteristics of energy transfer and interactions of matter and energy

Earth Science: Earth in the Universe; Earth systems, Structures, and Processes

Understanding the earth/ moon/ sun system and the properties and predictable motion of celestial bodies in the Universe; Understanding the structure of the earth and how interactions of constructive and destructive forces have resulted in changes in the surface of the Earth over time and the effects of the lithosphere on humans.

Life Science: Structures and functions of living organisms; Ecosystems

Understanding the structures, processes and behaviors of plants that enable them to survive and reproduce; Understanding the flow of energy through ecosystems and the responses of populations to the biotic and abiotic factors in their environment.
