Valentine’s Day is all about spreading joy and it doesn’t get any better than something from the heart. At Corvian Community School, a charter school in Charlotte, the elementary students are already hard at work writing poems for the upcoming holiday. Instead of buying pre-printed cards, each student will receive kind words from their peers written or typed on a media of their choice that often include glitter, stickers and heartfelt drawings as well. Diamante, haiku, acrostic, and couplet poems are created from kindergarten to fourth-grade. While at first, this appears to be a daunting task for students to write a poem for each classmate, their eyes fill with joy on Valentine’s Day when they read all of the kind words hand picked for them. Parents even report that students elect to continue to read the Valentine poems far into the summer. Community, compassion, and respect are all elements important to the Corvian culture and certainly evident on this holiday.
